Cannabis giant TerrAscend to exit Michigan market, closing 20 stores

TerrAscend, a major cannabis operator, announced it will completely exit the Michigan market, closing all 20 dispensaries (including Gage Cannabis and Cookies in Jackson), as well as four cultivation and processing facilities statewide. The closure affects approximately 230 jobs—about 21% of TerrAscend's workforce—and aligns with a strategic shift to focus resources on more profitable core markets like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, California, and Toronto. The exit is part of a broader move to divest Michigan assets, pay down debt, and streamline operations; the process is expected to complete by the end of 2025.

Mike Tyson Urges Trump to Advance Cannabis Reform After Biden’s ‘Failed’ Pledge

Boxing icon Mike Tyson, along with a coalition of athletes and entertainers (including Kevin Durant and Dez Bryant), appeared on Fox & Friends to criticize President Biden for not fulfilling his campaign promises on cannabis justice. Tyson called for three key reforms: granting clemency to nonviolent marijuana offenders, rescheduling cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III, and eliminating banking discrimination against state‑legal cannabis businesses. He argued that cannabis is unfairly equated with drugs like heroin, highlighted the personal benefits he’s experienced from its use, and emphasized the growth and employment potential of the cannabis industry, which remains hindered by outdated federal laws.

Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed Senate Bill 3

Texas Governor Greg Abbott vetoed Senate Bill 3, which aimed to ban all consumable hemp products containing THC, including delta-8 and delta-9. Citing constitutional concerns and potential legal challenges, Abbott instead called for a special legislative session on July 21 to create a regulatory framework modeled after alcohol laws. This move keeps the $8 billion hemp industry legal—for now—while setting the stage for stricter regulations rather than an outright ban.

Burglars ransack Woody Harrelson and Bill Maher’s WeHo weed dispensary

Early Saturday morning, five masked individuals broke into The Woods, a cannabis dispensary in West Hollywood co-owned by Woody Harrelson and Bill Maher, by smashing the front window and stealing cannabis products before fleeing in a black sedan. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m., and the value of the stolen items has not been disclosed. Surveillance footage of the burglary has circulated on social media. Clark University identified a new species of psychoactive mushrooms.

Alexander Bradshaw, a post-doctoral researcher in Clark University's Biology Department, along with his team, has identified a new species of psychoactive mushroom named Psilocybe ochraceocentrata. This species is closely related to Psilocybe cubensis, a well-known psychoactive fungus. The discovery was made possible through collaboration with Cathy Sharp of the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe, who provided specimens collected in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Genomic sequencing confirmed that these specimens represent a distinct species. This finding highlights the rich, yet underexplored, fungal diversity in Africa.

Colorado is opening psychedelic mushroom healing centers.

These centers will allow people to take psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) with trained guides in a safe setting. Voters approved this idea in 2022 to help treat things like depression, anxiety, and PTSD—especially when other treatments haven’t worked.

So far, Colorado has received applications for dozens of licenses to grow, produce, test, and run these healing centers. The first ones are expected to open in late spring or early summer 2025.

While the sessions may be expensive (similar to Oregon’s $1,000–$3,000 range), the state hopes to make them more affordable with options like group sessions or sliding-scale fees. Some areas, like Colorado Springs, are pushing back against having centers locally, but supporters—especially veterans—believe this therapy could be life-changing.

Colorado’s program may serve as a model for other states in the future.
